My friend/boss Tim and his partner Kerry had a baby girl over the weekend (congratulations guys). Which got me thinking about that poem that assigns personality traits to children based on which day they are born. Well I could neither remember what day my daughter was born or what my own personality trait was supposed to be.
So anyway, Nina was born on a Friday which makes her “loving and giving”. Cool! But Wednesdays child is apparently “full of woe”. What the fuck? Look at the poem.
Mondays child is fair of face,
Tuesdays child is full of grace,
Wednesdays child is full of woe,
Thursdays child has far to go,
Fridays child is loving and giving,
Saturdays child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.
How come everyone gets an upbeat “yay-hooray” apart from us Wednesday kids? What was the person who wrote this thinking? Did they have some kind of beef with a Wednesday child. Did a Wednesday child steal his woman? Anyway I’m on the whole an upbeat chappie so it’s obviously a load of old bollocks but still.
Thinking about it now, when we had to learn this poem at school I’m pretty sure that my Mum lied about what “full of woe meant”. Anyway off the top of my head here are 10 alternatives that I would have found preferable:
